Individual family constellation: for whom, for what purpose?

When we talk about family constellations, we often imagine a large group, strangers representing members of your family, a collective performance. This image sometimes discourages people who might be interested in the process but don't feel ready to share their story with others.
What many people don't know is that constellations can also be practiced individually, one-on-one with a therapist, with the same level of depth and transformation. And for some people, it's even the most suitable way to begin.
How does it work individually?
In individual sessions, members of your family system are not represented by people but by figurines, objects, or supports placed on the floor. You place them in the space according to your feelings, without thinking, letting something intuitive guide your movements.
This placement often reveals surprising things: distances, shifts in perspective, exclusions, and rapprochements that say a great deal about how you perceive your family system and your place within it. The therapist then works with what has emerged, asks questions, suggests movements, and supports the resulting insights.
For whom is individual constellation therapy particularly suitable?
Individual constellations are particularly suitable for people who don't feel comfortable sharing their story in a group. They are also suitable for those who need a more intimate and confidential setting to explore sensitive areas, and for those who live far from any location offering group workshops, or whose availability doesn't align with group formats.
It is also very suitable when the issue is particularly sensitive: a heavy family secret, a past situation of violence, a subject that has never been discussed with anyone. In these cases, the individual setting offers additional security that allows for deeper exploration.
The same effects as in a group?
This is a question many people ask. The answer is yes, with some nuances. The individual format doesn't have the emotional power of a group setting, where participants feel and express things that are sometimes overwhelming. But it has other advantages: more time for you, a pace adapted to your state, and the possibility of moving back and forth between constellation work and discussion, reflection, and integration.
Many people who have done both describe individual constellations as gentler, and group constellations as more intense. Both are valuable, and often complementary.
And does it really work via video call?
Yes. This is probably the most frequently asked question, and the answer is often surprising. Individual constellation sessions via video call work very well. You can use objects you have at home, arrange them on a table or on the floor in front of your camera, and the work unfolds in the same way as in person.
The family system transcends geographical distance. What matters is the quality of presence, the security of the therapeutic framework, and your own inner availability. These conditions can easily be met through video sessions.
What problems should I consult about?
The reasons for seeking individual constellation work are numerous and varied. A feeling of repeating the same patterns in love or at work. A difficult relationship with a parent, child, sibling, or other family member. Unresolved grief. Difficulty finding one's place in life. A lack of drive, desire, or vital energy without a clear explanation. A painful family event that one cannot seem to overcome.
You don't need a very specific request to begin. Sometimes, "I feel that something is preventing me from moving forward" is a sufficient and very productive reason to start constellation work.
