Family constellations: what are they and how do they work?

You may have heard of it without really knowing what it is. Or someone may have spoken enthusiastically about it, and you're wondering if it could be relevant to you. Family constellations are still relatively unknown to the general public, yet they are among the most powerful therapeutic approaches available for understanding and transforming relational dynamics.
Here is a clear, jargon-free explanation of what it really is and what it can do for you.
The basic idea: we all wear something for our family
Every family is a system. In this system, each member has a place, a role, a story. And sometimes, without being aware of it, we carry something that doesn't really belong to us: the unexpressed sadness of a parent, the guilt of an ancestor, a grief never resolved, a long-kept secret.
These invisible burdens influence our behavior, our choices, our relationships, and how we feel about our own lives. Family constellations aim to make visible what is hidden, to put everything in its rightful place, and to release what we unknowingly carried for others.
How does a session actually unfold?
A constellation can be practiced in a group or individually. In both cases, the principle remains the same: the members of the family system concerned by the problem are represented in space.
In a group setting, volunteer participants play the roles of family members. They allow themselves to be guided by their feelings, their spontaneous movements, what emerges within them when they "represent" someone. This is what is called the resonance field: something difficult to explain rationally, but which those who have experienced it often describe as remarkably accurate.
Individually, figurines or objects replace the representatives. The effect is different but just as profound for many people.
What constellations can bring
Family constellations can help in many situations: relational patterns that repeat themselves from relationship to relationship, difficulties in finding one's place in professional or emotional life, old and painful family conflicts, an unexplained feeling of sadness or heaviness, physical or emotional symptoms that resist other approaches, or even a feeling of being stuck without knowing why.
They are aimed at people who are going through a crisis as well as those who are generally doing well but feel that there is something to release in order to move forward more lightly.
What constellations are not
Family constellations are not fortune-telling, magic, or an esoteric ritual. They are therapeutic sessions led by a trained professional, and are part of a serious systemic and transgenerational approach.
They don't promise to solve everything in one session. They initiate a process, an awareness, a shift in perspective that continues to unfold long after the session. And like any therapeutic approach, they require a qualified practitioner, a supportive environment, and a space of trust.
Family constellations in Lyon and online
Individual constellation sessions work very well via video call. Geographical distance does not change the depth of the work: the field of resonance knows no distance.
Whether you are in Lyon or anywhere else in France, I will support you in this work with kindness and rigor, at your own pace and respecting your story.
Take care. Contact me for more information or to schedule an appointment; I'd be happy to answer your questions.
